Why Coding? Why Flatiron?
Hello! I am David and welcome to my first blog. I’d like to answer a few questions Why have i chosen to pursue a software engineering career ? How did i settle on flatiron school?
Background
Like many of you 2020 has been a year full of the unknown. At the beginning of the year I resigned from an Elementary Ministry Coordinator position after 3 years in hopes of finding a better career. With all the student loans my wife and I acquired and a child due in April we had to start planning for the future. The only goal I had was finding a stable career regardless of how interesting that role was, I soon found myself employed in a factory working 2nd shift making screws. It checked the marks of a stable job, however it wasn’t fulfilling, meaningful, or fun. I worked there for a measly 3 weeks before COVID-19 shut many places down and I soon found myself furloughed from my “stable” job. With the newly found free-time my wife and I prepared for our baby girl and planned for the future.
“Settling” on software engineering
With all this available time I found myself with I had all the time to pursue research different career options that would allow flexibility, financial stability, and a career I was passionate about. Some of those options were UI/UX design, IT support, graphic design, and software engineering. I’ve always been interested in simple design and I find joy in things that work efficiently. I was drawn to coding because of the ability to create and solve problems by using multiple methods or paths to complete a task. While coding requires precision it also allows a unique approach in the methods one can take in developing a program or application.
So Why Flatiron?
After weighing the options of coding bootcamps, a college degree, or the self taught route I decided coding bootcamps offered the most pros. In most cases they offered an involved network of students and alumni, lessons that stay current with the industry standard, and access to career services. While reviewing the various options Flatiron became the obvious choice. The track record of graduate job placement is high, the payment options are flexible and easy to manage, and the community of like minded individuals would insure that I would stay motivated and encouraged.
